24.Nov.2009 My Kids Seem to Be Realists
Abigail and Isaac have both written some stories lately. (3rd and 1st graders). Well, one thing I have noticed is they never end with the protagonist living happily ever after, or living in some fantasy land, happy go lucky with elves or anything like that. No, they usually end up caught, dead, eaten or a combination of those things.
Now granted lately Turkeys have been the subject. But the turkeys have names and are running free and wild and having fun, doing things, trying to outsmart hunters and such. But they always die in the end. And it is usually abrupt and to the point.
I like it. To many sappy, happy stories out there. I like that in their stories John Wayne dies at the end. Good stuff.
Of course maybe I have swayed them, seeing how we teach them that Santa Clause WAS real but now he is dead.
Some would call this pessimistic or a downer. No, it is life. It is reality. Learn’em young.

I guess if you’re for the turkey it can seem like a downer….BUT, if you’re rooting for the hunter it could be viewed as ‘happily ever after’. It’s all about how you view things. For example….instead of ‘my glass is half empty’ maybe you’re more of a …”hey, what’s up with this half empty glass of water? I never said I was thirsty. Now I’ll have to wash it, and I didn’t even want it in the first place.” kind of a guy.
i think God is a fan of the impossible. he even brought people back to life—there isn’t anything realistic about that.
