11.May.2010 Big Item Trash Day and Painted Furniture
Remember this piece?
Well, it and the trash day windows inspired me to revamp our “entertainment center.” And you know I love me some painted furniture, so why not.
Here is the original piece. I had built it in high school shop class. (Didn’t remember to take a true before picture so I found this one…)

And here it is now.

I added some dimension to the sides in addition to the windows…

It is a few layers of paint and some sanding for the “vintage” look.

The graphics behind the windows are all just for fun. No deep meaning. Just trying for a certain look and a random feel. Like perhaps after you did the initial patterned paper look, you settled for whatever you could find laying around the garage…

Knobs are from hobby lobby and were pretty cheap, but worked well. The hinges are black as well, and all put on before painting to allow them to gain some of the effect as well.
So that’s it. We will still use it as an entertainment center. Still in the basement for now. Maybe some day, at some new house it can have a more grand purpose.
22.Jan.2010 Painting Furniture
OK,
Another thing I like is carpentry, building things and painted furniture. So without you thinking I am too “crafty” I am going to link to a crazy gal’s site, with a pretty cool paint job on a thrift store china cabinet.
Sometimes you just have to go for it and not worry about it being an “antique,” or what will the neighbors think, or whatever. If it is something you will like and enjoy in your house . . . go for it. See beyond what it looks like at the thrift store, garage sale or on your neighbors lawn on your city’s trash pickup day, (ie, our current set of dining room chairs…and yes I did reapolster them, that is how I roll…even if I can’t spell reaploster and I am not going to google it) see what it will look like in your living room.
So enjoy.

Oh, and I forgot. When you get over there you will see they had to rent a uhaul. Well, I have a truck. So there. Not too crafty.
28.Jan.2009 Signature
Ok, sigs as promised.
I tell people all the time. Your signature does NOT have to match your name! It is your mark. Your unique identity. So when you are at the bank and your signing 50 pages worth of loan stuff and the loan guy keeps reminding you, “make sure you sign it just like your name appears…if there is a middle initial or not or whatever…” Seriously? You want me to fake my actual signature so it looks like the name you have typed above. So then when it goes all legal someday they (you know the man…whoever) can say, “look it isn’t even his signature!” and they take your house away.
I am telling you, you can sign a big x if that is your mark on this world. It is yours. It is personal. You don’t have to change it for the banks or whoever. It is a signature. Not necessarily a copy of your name. It doesn’t have to legible, it doesn’t have to be anything. Just you.

23.Jan.2009 Change3
Well, it begins.
Now, how long on the FOCA? Maybe President Obama didn’t quite mean the “first” thing he does in office.
How many “change” posts before everyone is completely turned off? But it is only fair, I have mentioned before how I for one am in favor of “watch dog” organizations/websites. Even though I know us young Christians (sorry Christ-followers) are supposed to think those are uncool now.
Maybe next week we can get to one of my promised rants, how about . . . “How your signature does not have to match your name.”
19.Jan.2009 Change
Awesome.
It looks like the change we were promised is already here! Can’t wait to see what is next.
02.Jan.2009 Workout
I was doing some cardio when I had this great blog idea . . .
Don’t you love it when people casually drop some sort of workout reference into their conversation or story or whatever they are telling you. “So, the other day I was at the gym and . . .” or “I was up early, enjoying God’s creation while jogging through the neighborhood and . . .” (by the way is it morning run or morning jog?)
Next time you should stop them and ask them if they wanted you to notice the workout part. Anyways get ready for more of these as the new year is here. Lots of resolutions you know.
“Man, I have been training for a marathon and it really shows me (insert spiritual reference . . .)” Uggh. So my blog promise is you won’t hear those things from me. And no this isn’t just some shot at people who actually workout or something. I would never do that. No never.
Oh, the first line of this post was a joke . . . my physique comes straight from God.
05.Nov.2008 Election
OK. My man lost. My party lost. Here are some random thoughts from yesterday, watching last night and waking up this morning (I was asked by my wife not to share all of what I thought last night, so this may or may not be partially pre-censored):
- “Free coffee. Free donuts. Free chicken sandwiches. Free ice cream. If this is the kind of socialism we can expect, count me in!” ht badbanana
- I turn on the TV at about 6:30 and McCain is up 8 to 3! Yes.
- I then try and explain the electoral college to my 7 and 5 year old. They are not getting it. We finally settle on calling them “points.” Each state is worth a certain amount of points and so on. So they are now constantly trying to figure out the score, and are excited with me about McCain’s 5 point lead.
- Things are turning rather quickly. Oldest boy is now in tears. Doesn’t understand why “we” are losing.
- Kids also can’t understand why different networks have different scores.
- ABC is having way too much fun with their interactive map. Gibson is giddy.
- McCain’s party looks laaaaaaame, compared to Obama’s Grant Park bash.
- That church on ABC, Emmanuel Baptist maybe? in ATL, are they going to lose their tax free status?
- Obama wins.
- McCain speech. Appropriate.
- Did the networks hire reporters to gush over the McCain supporters if they had won? This is journalism?
- I am tired of seeing that one couple in the all yellow Livestrong gear at Obama’s party. All yellow, really?
- I never knew Dr. King was for the killing of babies?
- God is sovereign = I didn’t get what I want. ht Jon
- Good speech by Obama.
- Love how he already told everyone that things may not get done in one year, or two, or even in one term…way to hold strong to your promises. And nice play by encouraging everyone to vote for your second term already.
- Lots of tears everywhere…me too (on the inside).
- Why is Oprah laying on that man? Has Jesse Jackson had the fake tears all night? Maybe this will mean we don’t have to see him or Al Sharpton anymore. ht justin
- McCain’s crowd old and white, Obama’s crowd young and mixed.
- Obama’s parties and website/web presence alone was probably enough to win the election. Superior to McCain’s in every way.
- Going to bed.
- Woke up this morning and the boy asked who was winning. It always comes back to who is winning. It is always about points. Don’t let anyone ever tell you different. (I am talking about you TBall people.) No tears this morning. He was all cried out I guess.
- Good point on radio on drive into work. Which Obama will be president? Senate Obama or campaign Obama? I agree and think they are very different. We will see I guess. I think it will be campaign Obama. You better hope so or hello France. (socialist that is…)
- Turned to sports radio. Awe…comfort. I like sports.
30.Oct.2008 Vote1
OK. Time for politics.
I know you are tired of it. But this post won’t be any good next week. But I can promise you this isn’t a nuetral post about voting. I am not here to encourage you to “rock the vote” or anything. If your voting for the wrong team. Don’t vote. More on whose team is right in a second. Oh, and we will get back to Pam’s comment regarding Girl Scouts at a later time. They can wait.
So the right team? Republicans. I am voting for McCain.
What I am getting tired of is all the people whining about how tough it is to decide between Obama and McCain. A gentlemen in my office nailed it the other day while talking to an undecided voter.
Q: “Do you normally lean liberal or conservative?”
A: “Conservative.”
Done. Vote McCain. Did you all miss that memo where Republicans are conservative and Democrats are liberal? Things haven’t changed. Vote the one you are. Why on earth would you be part of a party that doesn’t represent who you are? It is the same reason I mentioned United Methodist the other day. I don’t ever want to belong to an organization that has flawed values at the top. No matter how great your local group is or whatever, you are always supporting the parent organization. Back to the girl scouts here too. (you’ll get that full rant eventually as stated above.)
So when I step in the booth, do my values line up with Democrats or Republicans? Pretty easy, here. So again why would someone who doesn’t really believe democratic values run as anything else? They will run as democrats.
Now some will tell you that you can’t hold these liberal vs. conservative views anymore. It is all grey. Christianity isn’t liberal or conservative, it is confusing and on and on. Hog wash. Where is the confusion? I am not confused. Nothing has seemed to change. You can have Donald Miller and Brian McClaren trying to confuse the issues all you want, I and hopefully you are not buying it. Some people want to live in grey. It is easier and more comforting for them.
Well, John McCain is this and that, and he isn’t Republican enough or Christian enough…Fine. At least he picked the right team. You honestly feel your Obama vote will end up being a vote for conservative values? More so than a McCain vote? Don’t vote.
I got my Kansas Voter’s for life guide. Yes about one issue. Surprise they are all republicans. Again. No confusion. It is simple. Look up Democrat values. Compare them to republican ones. I am going crazy here, no confusion. Not just on abortion, everything. (and abortion beliefs will dictate your other beliefs, just as my belief in God affects my world view.) (Or is it effects?)
Am I voting for a messiah? no. Does gov’t replace Christianity? no. I get all that, don’t think the gov’t has to be christian, they just have to uphold the constitution, yada yada. Well I am still supposed to vote my beliefs. So do I vote for a democrat belief opposed to almost all moral things I believe in or vote republican which almost down the board agrees with a biblical worldview. Easy, no confusion.
Oh yeah, I forgot to mention at the outset I am a Christian and thus it affects my view. So if you are a liberal democrat vote for Obama. (Did I just imply you may not be a Christian? Or maybe you are just a young Christian who has failed to gain a biblical worldview yet…yes I did.)
Oh and the Girl Scouts are voting for Obama by the way. (Just to get back to them one last time.)
